"Nibutani Dam Getting Silted Up"
On the Saru River in Hokkaido, a holy place of the indigenous Ainu people, has been desecrated with silt deposits by the Nibutani Dam, which was constructed by the Japanese Government in 1997.
The central government was taken to court over the issue, and the project was deemed to be illegal. This court ruling, notwithstanding, the Government have proceeded with plans to construct a second dam - the Biratori Dam - further upstream on the same river system.
